Photo id/ref number: 11616866623/B038/D7752 The splendid Norman castle at the Northumberland coastal village of Bamburgh. The ancient castle stands on a rock 150ft. above the sea and is accessible from the south east only. The rock is part of the Whin Sill which reappears six miles north east as the Farne Islands. The first fortress was built on the high point by Ida, c547, the first king of the Bernicians, in the 6th century AD and Bamburgh became the political centre of the Bernician kings.
I've a soft spot for this wonderful castle.Never tire of visiting when I am in Bamburgh. I have found out with having ancestors from there, that an aunt was educated in the castle. Also the Ramsay and Martin families were sea captains and sea fairing folk ,that a relative married into Grace Darlings family.
Having roots there makes this all the more special .
