I understand that the original bridge supporting chains were imported from Australia.
I remember this bridge so well. I lived in Scotswood and walked over the bridge each day to work at Mills Scaffold on the Blaydon side of the river. I also remember the chaps who controlled the traffic going through the arches. Happy memories.
